When I parked my 1968 580CK a week ago it was fine. Today when I attempted to move it, the left wheel is locked up, and tractor won't move. I can rock the wheel 6 inches with rear wheels jacked off the ground, so I am assuming the problem is ahead of the finals. No time to work on it today, but trying to decide where to start trouble shooting. Brakes are not great. Is it possible something has fallen apart in the brake housing ? Or am I looking at a ring and pinion problem ?

I have a 1969 CK 580. I had the same thing happen to mine last winter. The dished plates in the brake assembly were very worn, so the balls (which should sit in the dishes and actuate the brakes)rode out of the dishes all together. Once out of the dishes, the balls don't go back in on there own (or at least I couldn't get them to do so). When the balls ride up onto the high point of the dish or outside of the dish, it causes a the braking plate to push outward and create friction with the steels. Thats what cause the brakes to work. When the pedal is released, the balls, if still in the dish, roll back to the low point of the dish and releases the pressure to the braking face. However, if the balls cant go back down into the dish becasue they've rolled out, then the brake gets stuck.

I ended up pulling the brakes and puting in new replacement assemblies. Not a really difficult job, but it does take some time. Best of luck with it.

POG, Just got mine apart the other day. Not too bad, as you said. Problem was the outer half of the expanding plates had glued it's self to the cover from all the oily dirt and mud that had collected in there. Apearantly this caused the discs to expand and lock up that side when trying to move the tractor. I thought it odd, because the tractor never had very good brakes, and It hadn't set very long. I have most the parts, and the rest due in early next week. My ramps and ball bearings were in pretty good shape. A good cleaning and new liners should put me back in bussiness. The mighty ole 580 will roll again !!! Thanks for the reply

After you eliminate the brakes, the only avenue you have is to start pulling it apart..
