I hope someone can help shed some light on my situation. I just got a JD 450B. I think it is what has been referred to in earlier posts as the loggers special or something like that. It has the winch on the back and lever on right to operate it. Anyway, everything was going fine with it. I was pushing a loose stump in low, shifted to reverse and nothing. It wouldnt move. I shifted into low with the same results. High gear does work. I can shift into low or reverse without pushing the clutch, its like there is nothing there. I had just tried the winch for the first time, could that have something to do with it? Do they share the use of something? The winch does still work. I am kinda lost and could really use some help. Thanks.

The only corrolation between low and reverse is at the manifold and sealing rings. Put a guage[ 200 lb.] into the port on the top cover between steering levers. You will find a drum bung there . Remove the bung, using a 3/16" allen wrench with a dab of grease on it remove the 1/8 pipe plug. The grease is so you don't drop the plug into the transmission case. I use a grease gun hose with adapter to guage . Screw the hose into the port where the plug came out.Lock brakes, shift the 4 speed shifter to a neutral position between 3rd and 4th gear. Start the machine, gently let out the clutch pedal to make sure you're in neutral . you can then shift the HLR transmission into the ranges to check pressures. It should read 175-185 lbs. at approx.1200-1500 rpm.The only other thing I can think of is maybe a countershaft problem under the clutchpacks. I don't have a book in front of me to check this, however...Usually when a countershaft " goes south " it makes a real racket....
