420 and the 1010 have engines of about the same size assuming we're talking about gasoline engines, close to equal horsepower at equal RPMs, and even fuel consumption although the 420 is slightly easier on fuel. The 420 has two big cylinders whereas the 1010 has four little ones. The 1010 is rated at a bit more horsepower though and can be run faster. The later 1010 crawler uses much of the 420 drivetrain but had options that weren't available on the 420 i.e. a hydraulic reverser. My point is, there is not a huge difference between the two in functionality. There is a big difference between having a bucket or a blade. 420 engine has 113 cubic inches, 27 horsepower at 1850 RPM, and works around 12 horsepower hours per gallon of gas. The 1010 engine has 115 cubic inches, 36 horse at 2500 RPM or 29 horse at 1900 RPM and works at around 10 1/2 horsepower hours per gallon of gas. I've got both, I like the sound of the two cylinder 420 better, but, also like the hydraulic reverser in my 1010 (same as used in the later 350 series). Now diesel is a different story. The 435 or 440 was available with a Detroit 2-53 (106 cubic inch) diesel engine, and the 1010 was available with a 144 cubic inch diesel. Parts are much easier to get for the Detroit than the Deere engine.
