My son and I are looking at a 1979 Case 450 (B, I think) and will be our first. It seems to be in fair shape (cranks and runs good - no smoke, steers good, no apparent noise in transmission, strong enough to down large pine trees 15" to 20" dia). Main problems appear to be in the bucket assembly that drifts down quite fast (we hope this can be helped by overhauling the cylinders). The bucket pins (especially lower) and all control arm pins are very loose. The control arms have a lot of play (side to side). The right side arm assembly is rubbing against the engine cover. Is this something to be concerned about when determing the value of the machine? How difficult is this to correct? How costly? Planning to do most of the work ourselves.

Look for cracks where the undercarriage connects to teh machine. my bucket assembly rubs too but there is wear strips or pads on mine. they dont' rub hard or anything so its' nothing i'm gonna bother fixing. Parts are easy to get and the machine is a dream to work on except for changing teh gauges in teh dash, that sucks. just my .02

Hi Charlie,
I have a 450B loader same year with all the same problems. My arms drifted down quite rapidly until I had my cylinders and the control valve rebuilt. I was pleasantly surprised to find the average price to rebuild a cylinder was about $40 and the valve assembly was under $50. That was at my local Case Industrial dealer. That cured my problem. My loader assembly also scrubs on the right side. Not bad though. No intention to work on that. I have slop in all pins. Made some new pins on my lathe and pressed in some new bushings where I could. Most are still sloppy. For my limited use it works fairly well. A good fab shop with the OEM parts and a press would be a much better choice. None of this is very hard. The cylinders are very manageable by one person.

Good luck.

David,
Appreciate your time! I am finding the Case 450B may not be very hard or expensive to fix. Spoke with an after market parts house yesterday. They told me the same thing (bucket assembly and cylinders/control valve).
Charlie
