sloppy old backhoe

I bought an old backhoe. i was told it was off a john deere crawler loader, i'm thinking something along the size of a D-4 or D-6. It's a pretty big hoe at any rate. My dad designed a custom bracket so we could hang this hoe on the back of a Massey Ferguson 274 4x4. Yeah the backhoe is too big for this set up but it's been working so far as we don't push or pull anything with the backhoe on (we busted the rear axle last time). Now, to my question. The backhoe is sloppy in it's side to side. Weather the hoe is up or in operation when you let the lever go for the side to side of the boom, the boom keeps going for a bit than kinda swings back and forth a wee bit. It's sloppy is all. How can I fix this?

You may want to check the cushon valve, There should be a cushon valve on the lines between the spool valve and the cylinders. It prevents the pressure from bursting the lines when stopping the swing

We had an old 4500 ford that had 2 one way cylinders with a swing chain, the cylinders were worn and oil would by pass and cause the boom to drift during swing. We would have to drain off excess the fluid and it would work good for days. Allan

Does it have the round type swing cylinder or two separate linear cylinder for the swing. With the round type, it has two spined conectors at each end these wear over time and will cause the sloppy performance. To fix this you must replace the conector and the main shaft. That shaft is a very expensive part( about 5,000 ), so get use to what you have!!

It has a round type swing cylinder. So i'm looking at 5 g's to fix it eh? I paid less that half that for backhoe so i guess i will just have to get used to it. lol

My guess would be replace the pins and bushings they go in. I have a small back hoe on an 8N and when I pulled a few of the pins found them about half gone from old age.
