I been wanting a Mini excavator for quite some time now, theres a large machinery auction coming up this week, (Richie Brothers)and they have quite a few of them, different brands. Which are the better brands and probably easier put which ones to stay away from. I have played with old crawlers for years but don't know much about these. I am looking for something about 8000 lbs.

I rented a couple of excavators over the years. I rented a couple of kubota's and they were both garbage. The drives would get hot and not go anymore until they cooled off. My buddy owns one and he runs into the same problems. My favourite and the best performing one was a Case 9007 excavator. It weighed in at 14000 lbs and change. about seven and quarter ton. Steel tracks with gobs of power. I rented that machine a few times with never any problems. If i were ever to afford one i would buy one of those. I find most mini excavators are just too small. Just my .02

Well I see in their last auction they had out here 6 to 8000 lb Kabotas went for about 7K. And there were some other name brands also for about that price. That seemed fair to me.

they're good deals if you go day or so early & try them out. I've bought 7 of them, no serious problems yet. Leaky cylinders are no problem; your local hydraulic shop can order seals to fix'em for $25. I've bought mostly Cats, Kobelco & one little 5000 lb. Nissan.

Much like the small used crawler market, grey market mini-x's abound. Names like Sumitomo, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Yutani, etc. These to my knowledge are grey market, but that does not make them a bad machine only quite difficult to obtain repair parts. If any one mini-x is any better than another I dont know which one it is, you can get more bang for your buck with a grey market but it's a gamble in my eyes. This may not be an answer to your question, just a thought that came to me.
