I probably messed up but maybe someone can tell me for sure whether I did or not. Ref: Case 850B dozer. I bought some hyraulic transmission fluid to put in the hydraulic resorvoir. It was running great before I did this but I thought it probably needed to be filled up. Anyway, I put 5 gallons of this in the hydraulic resorvoir and cranked her up and started traveling. It didn't seem right at first; seemed to drive slower and somewhat lugged the engine but after about 100 yards, I could tell something was not right. It started to smell something was overheating so I shut her down. Have I put the wrong oil in the hydraulics? If so, are there any suggestions on what to do?

Yes, it does smell like a brake dragging. To confirm that , I backed it up today and noticed the right side would lockup whenever I switched from either slow speed or high speed to neutral (mid position on the levers). It had not done this before. Maybe just a coincidence with my adding 5 gallons to the hydraulic resorvoir. Do you reckon? I guess I need to adjust the brake??

I sure hope it is a brake dragging. I will check later this week and give you an update.

UTF will not hurt it.For all intents and purposes it is a 20w oil with friction modifiers. We use it for hydraulic oil in all our tractors, trucks and equipment.

Thanks. I went back and checked the manual and found that the recommended fluid is Case TCH but the alternate fluid is Type C-2. I looked at the container for the oil that I used and it said it meet C-2 specs. I guess I have another problem. It is raining here today so I have to wait until later to see if I can find out what the problem is. Is there a possibility that I could overfill the resorvoir?
