I have a plain JD450 loader. On the left side gear selector I have 1st thru 4th gear. All of them work most of the time but occassionaly when I try to put it in second and let out the clutch the machine won't move....just like it is in neutral. No noise or anything. I shft it back and forth some and then it will finally take off.

It only happens in second. the rest work.

Sometimes if I going down hill in third it will sorta kick itself out of gear and start freewheeling with a little grinding. I hit the brake, push the clutch in and strart out again and its back in third.

What should I do. The Low-High-Reverse lever beteeen my feet works fine in all.

It can also be caused by the front bearing on the output shaft spinning out thru the case. Run it long enough and you will replace the entire transmission and ring gear.

Yikes.. To see the gears, you must remove the top cover. [ where the steering levers attach]. Drain down the oil so you can see for any damage. It sounds as if the gears might have not been engaged all the way and possibly wore the gear down. This can happen from someone reinstalling the tank assembly and not checking the shifter for proper gear actuation.
