D4 24 volt starting system

how is the system wired and is it a positive or negitive ground.

Tough question without more info. If you have an alternator, probably 12V neg ground. If you have a generator it could be a 24V generator or a 12V neg or pos ground. The 24V starter is NOT grounded to the frame, it has 12V P or N going into the INSULATED brushes and the other side 12V going into the fields. The circuit is completed on the commutator.

Call for "Old" John T, on this board, to give you a better description; he is knowledgeable enough to make one believe he was involved in the "invention" of electricity.

BTW, the CAT is not the worst electrical nightmare out there. This will no doubt offend some but the JD two cylinder diesel 24V electric start is a REAL experience. It charges 24V through the generator and the lights split the load; part (supposedly half) are 12V neg and the rest 12V pos. best, Phil

The serial # on that machine is 7U35621 appears to have a generator.

On left side it has the 24 volt starter Ihave not looked very close to other side, but it has only one belt so I would say no. later

Brad, take the voltage reg off and clean the base up. You should see 24 N or 24 P, that will tell you the ground polarity. It's likely pos ground. Is all of the wireing gone? More on wireing once you determine the ground.
