My 440 has a 12v battery (positive ground) in it. The generator is there but not connected. It was running rough so I started checking it out and immediately saw that it need new points. I installed new points and condensor. When I took off the distributer cap the coil wire fell out of the coil. I checked the coil and found that where the coil wire inserts into the coil was completely eaten up so I bought a new 6v (internal resister) coil at the auto store and installed it. I haven't been able to get it to hit a lick since the change. What may I have done wrong?

When you put in the points, did you possibly ground the connection at the points? With a test light at the coil check for current at the terminal coming from ign. switch. If it lights with key on . Go to next test. Put test light on other terminal while turning engine over with starter . [ In neutral please ]If it flashes with regularity the points are working as they should..If there is no flash , check the points for either dirty contacts , points set too wide of a gap when open with cam. If memory serves about .021 " inch gap with cam at widest point.
