I am looking to buy an older backhoe like early 70's to early 80's. I plan to do common tasks with it around my land and also maybe some small side jobs for other people. What brand and model backhoe do you think I should buy? I am familiar with Internationl, Ford, Case, and John Deere.

I'm no expert on TLB's but most agree that all the major manufacturers make good machines. Case 580 is probably the all time favorite/most popular, followed by the Deere 310, various Ford models (including real old ones) and JCB's (British). I would go with whatever machine you like that has a good dealer/parts outlet near you. International is good too (that's what I have), but parts availability will probably be more of a problem then the Case, Deere, and Ford lines (especially as the years roll by).

Good luck

I bought a 1983 Case 580D (2WD, standard hoe)a couple of years ago to clear some property in preparation for building a home. I told my wife that when we were done with the house, we could sell the machine for what we paid, I could, but I ain"t. You need to decide what features are important to you. Ex. 4 wheel drive, extenda-hoe, turbo, front bucket configuration etc. This will help in determining your budget and will eliminate some machines. All of the brands that 25 - 30 years old is going to require repair work at some point. If you are capable of doing the work yourself, check around for parts availability and cost in your area, if you are going to need a mechanic, find out what he is familiar with. In our area (South Jersey) Case is the workhorse, followed by Cat and Ford.
