Hi, I just picked up a John Deere 440 Dozer. It is a 2-cylinder gas.
When you let up on the main clutch the tractor stalls, the trans is in natural and the tractor just dies.
Does anyone have any idea what would cause this problem? Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

I have a 440 with the reverser. It is possible I think for the reverser clutches to both be engaged, due to damage, lack of oil causing friction seizure of the clutches is possible. If this is the case the engine cannot turn the re3verser shaft. There are two access hole plugs on the right rear and left front of the reverser housing which allow access to adjust these clutches. the manual describes the direction to turn to release pressure and adjust. The housing should contain auto trans fluid. Lavoy is very Knowledgable on tnese machines

I just went out checked and the handle for the reverser is stuck, and I cannot move it. Would that mean that the clutches are stuck in it? What would be the best way to free them up? the dozer will roll with the clutch engaged and disengaged.

Do you mean the the lever is stuck as in when you move it, you are unable to shift the reverser? Or do you mean that you can not move the handle itself at all? If you can not move the handle at all, the cross shaft is rusted in the dash, and the problem has nothing to do with the reverser. Lube it up and work the lever back and forth until it moves freely.

Most likely it is in two gears at once. Pull the transmission cover to find out for sure (but you may also be able to tell from shifter positions and action). They're famous for that when the end of the selector gets worn.

The tracks Still roll free when pulling it.
Would the tracks lock up if the trans is stuck between two gears?
