I have a 197? John Deere 450 loader
I am trying to figure out if it is a 450, 450B, or 450C. How can I tell, and how can I tell the year? I can't find any tags with a serial number thus far. The machine runs great and I love having it around, I would just like to know more about what I own.

450 and early 450-B had the High- Low- Reverse lever between your legs on a floor mounted lever. Mid to late 450-B HLR lever is on left shift quadrant next to 4 speed shifter. Early 450 machines had a serial number plate on the kick plate under the seat cushion, facing forward. later models had the plate on the front of battery box. As said before the C models had wet clutches..

Seems someone out there must have a serial number chart. But, for a general idea, the 450s had the smallest engines with 3.8" bore. The engine ID will enable you to tell. Later 450Bs had 4" bore engines and turbochargers. 450Cs were the first of the series to have wet steering clutches.
