I have a jd455d and the trasmission will not change into reverse low or neutral, The lever moves and the linkage is not broken but when you let out on the clutch no matter which selection you choose it stays in High gear. I took the top plate off the transmission and all the linkage is hooked up and the "plunger" is moving up and down. Also I need to know what the main difference is between the 455 and 555 is, I found a old 555 a guy is wanting to sell for parts, wondering if they will interchange?

Where do we come up with these problems?? I've been doing this for almost 30 years and I've never seen this problem... Take the lube line off the top where it goes from the "T" to the rubber bushing. There is a small " E " clip that holds the shift linkage to the upper manifold housing. Remove the 2 5/16" bolts that fasten the upper manifold to the main manifold. Lift the housing straight up and be carefull not to loose the o-rings between them. Examine the shift spool for breakage [ not likely ]. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the sealing rings on the HLR shaft to the manifold are leaking to the only place that holds oil pressure. If thats the case , a total tear-down of HLR transmission is needed. And NO 455 and 555 aren't the same at all. Did the transmission act strange before this problem came up?? Keep us posted on this. I'm curious of the outcome...

Yes, the transmision was running hot, but I was thinking it was all due to permatex that got put inside, YES permatex, Whenever I had new steering clutches put in they installed new pump, and screen ect. They over permatexed the screen filer housing and I ended up with alot in the transmision, I had been flushing the transion 1x per month trying to get it all out. I could only run the loader about 1 hr at a time and then shutdown to let it cool off. If anyone is in TN I can tell them where not to take a loader or dozer for repairs.

Trans heat can be caused by a transmission not in adjustment. There are several adjustments to get pressures and speed of shifts right. When it's working right, It should " just " suck you forward from the seat back when shifting from high to reverse . Yep , permatex has it's place. But not in a Deere transmission. I've seen gobs of blue silicone sealing castings too. Not a good idea.It gets into everything..Thats why they make Anerobic Plastic Gasket..
