I have a 4-53T in a small dump, 6-71T in an Insley hoe, 2 4-71's ( 2-valve) in my old boat and all have mobil delvac 15-40 in them with no problems.. I know they say to use 40 weight but all my other equipment uses multi and it's easier to have one drum of oil in stock.

Use 40 or even 50 during summer, and specifiy oil for 2 cycles's engine. As rpg wrote, no 15W40 in GM 2 cycles.

A good quality 30 or 40 wt. depending on season. Multi-grades are not acceptable.

What is wrong with 15W40.
I have an allis crawler with a 471 detroit and a 1855 oliver with an 453 detroit and run this oil for years already in both of them with no ill effect, they don't use oil. So what is the secret???.

Just curious, why not use a multi grade? I have a 3-71 in an old Trojan loader.

I don't claim to be a DD expert, although I do own a 3-71 stationary engine, but the guys on the DD board who are experts (see link below), say that using 15w40 causes them to slobber oil out the exhaust. They say the DD's were designed for straight grades and don't like multigrades.

Ok, well I have to say I do use 15W-40 in my 4-71, could that be the cause of my what I think is low oil pressure? I have about 30psi at full rpm. The engine is completely overhauled with new bearings. Thanks /Dennis

There are pages and pages of info about oil at the Detroit Diesel, Allison website. In the great white north we run 40 wt. in summer, and30 in winter. DD says you can use multi grade for below -18c if you cant pre heat the engine. I never have, dwn to -38c. 30 psi at full throttle is a bit low, I wouldn't worry unless your below 10 at a hot idle. tm

No I donīt pay to much attention to the oil pressure anymore, at hot idle I have around 15 psi oil pressure.. But I wonder if it would be higher if I change from 15W-40 to 40W?
