I aquired an old Trojan loader with a 2 stroke 3-71. There are a pair of positive and a pair of negative battery cables going to battery box. It had no batteries in it. Were these 2 12v batteries hooked in series for 24v, hooked paralell, or 2 6 v batteries hooked together for 12v.

Have a 3-71 in an allis dozer. it was made with positive ground and two 6 volt batteries connected in series to get 12 volts. we now use one big 12 volt battery. can be converted to negative ground if you put a new universal regulator on and change around the ammeter leads.

My initial thought is - where do these pairs of cables connect to. If they each connect to a common point, batteries must be in parallel.
With JS on voltage, or check a light bulb?
If nothing else you can easily find out polarity if it has an ammeter, but disconnect V/R & genny first . All provided no one has changed things previously, of course.

Look at the tag on the starter for a tag and if it still has a Delco generator look on the voltage regulator for the voltage and the correct polarity/ An alternator will also be stamped for voltage.

2 cables run to starter selnoid, the other 2 to a common ground. Thought about checking tags on starter, etc. haven't gotten to it yet. It does have a delco regulator.

Because of where the battery cables go, I would say it's 12 volt with two battery's
