There is a d4 near here(in logging country) with winch and blade for sale for $1000. I don't know sickum about what to look for in a crawler or a Cat. My gut tells me that a D4 ought to sell for 2 or 3 grand if it runs right. I have enough land to use something like this for awhile and then sell it. I don't think I have enough knowledge or tools for a diesel or tracks, to make any major repairs. The purchase price is enough to tap me out so I wouldn't be able to spend a lot on an overhaul. Do I go to the budget commitee (lovely wife) and ask for $1000? or do I stick my head in the sand and forget about it?
Thanks in advance, Semper Fi

Nuts; missed it by that much in reply to Rob in Ore, 10-24-2005 12:25:14
I called on the cat and it just sold. I can only hope that the undercarriage was shot, the block was cracked, there was no cable on the frozen winch, and a tree was growing through the blade. Oh well, maybe next time.

$1000 for a running D4 with a winch is a great deal. And maybe still a great deal even if it's not running, especially if it's less than 40 years old. $1000 is not a whole lot more than what it's likely worth at today's highly inflated scrap iron prices (due to demand from China and elsewhere).

With that said, at that price there's almost certainly something significantly wrong with it...and possibly something very expensive to fix. The undercarriage is the biggest factor. Worn out tracks, rollers and sprockets can run you BIG $$. Get a crawler expert to look it over before buying. But if $1000 is a razor's edge strain on your budget, then I would run from that or any crawler. Stick with horses and chains, you'll be better off.
