Hi All,

I have just come across this website and find it very interesting.

I recently purchased a used older JD450 and would like to find out more particulars about it. It is a crawler loader and has hydraulic winch attachment on the back.
Model type: T5E3M
Seril #0709551
Can anyone tell what the year of manufacture is and what would be the model designation (eg: JD450 what?).

Thanks in advance for any information - will be much appreciated.

John

I don't have serial number specs. but I can give you some general guidelines. The 450 crawler evolved from the 2010 series in 1966. The first 450s had the HL-R shifter on the floor rather than mounted high and the engine was the smallest of the 450 series with a 3.8" bore. The 450B had a larger 4" bore engine and the late 450B was turbocharged. The 450C was turbocharged and was the first in the series to have wet steering clutches. I worked on them all when they were new and I don't recall Deere Co. ever puting any names on the machines other than 450 - until the "C" series came out - so many 450 "Bs" had 450 on them. My memory is a little foggy on this particular detail though.

Thanks for the replies so far.

From comments so far, it looks like mine is a 1966 or later model.

I have the high-low and reverse on the floor between the two control levers. On the left hand side I have a four speed reduction gear shift lever. On the right hand side I have the controls for the bucket, Also, on this model, on the right hand side (outside) I have the controls for the rear hydraulic winch (which works well).

I am trying to put together some information on this machine as I go along. Everything works, though the past maintenance is sketchy at best - a lot has been ignored. I do have a basic operators manual that gives basic maintenance items and capacities etc. I am about to plumb in an inline engine block heater for the coming winter - previous owner used ether on a regular basis it seems. I want it to start without the gas if possible, it can always be used as a last resort.

Anyway, back to the basic question of year of manufacture and model designation. It seems it is a 1966 or simiar year. No model designation other than JD450.

If anyone else can supply more information I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance,

John

Outside of using a serial-number-by-year list - which I don't have, I suggest you get yourself a parts book. It will help you narrow down the year of manufacture. I assume, you do NOT know for sure if the winch is the same age as the crawler, or if the engine is original. The HL-R shifter on the floor makes it an early straight 450 machine, i.e. not a "B." There are lots of other subtleties you can look for. The earliest 450s have 202 cubic inch engines (if diesel) with a 3.85" bore. It is basically the same engine as used in the 350s with one cylinder added and along with a pair of balancing shafts. Other changes include the type of engine oil-pressure regulator used, the type of transmission filter, configuration of the dashboard, mounting of the track cross-bar to the frames, location of the tachometer if it has one, existence of power-steering and what sort of pump is used for it, etc. &c. For everyone of these features, and more, the parts book will give you a range in serial numbers and/or years of production.
