Got it all apart today and found multiple problems. The clutch manifold was broken and allowing the fluid to leak out. The first fiber disc and the first driving disc were broken. Looks like someone put the first fiber disc on the wrong side of the lock ring and when they depressed the brake it broke the two discs. The pieces were all over the place inside and outside of the steering clutch pack. The spring and the adjustment bracket were ok. It just looked like they were broken from the outside. Called John Deere and they have all the parts coming. Appreciate your help.

Some more " Pikers " playing equipment mechanics. Put'er back together.. Watch very carefully when you install the set screw on the final drive top shaft. You should be able to look down the access hole and see the taper of the splines. When I tighten the setscrew, I watch very carefully as the set screw pulls the shaft into place. I snug it down with a 3/8 peanut ratchet and square drive socket, then back it off 1/8 th of a turn , then lock down the locknut. This method eliminates the possibility of the drum coming loose and eating the side of the pressure hose that goes to the manifold. A very common problem when repairs are done here. I usually use a cherry picker [ or boom on my truck ] to support the clutch drum . I snap a pair of fabrication vise grips onto the ears of the brake band .This allows movement of parts so the shaft can be installed without binding.. Good Luck..
