Komatsu Fuel Problems?

I have a Komatsu D31-16 crawler loader. I was driving it across the farm and the engine would surge and then cut off. I was almost out of fuel. I topped it off and it would barely idle. Decided to change fuel filter. It now runs fine for about 45 seconds then dies. I can pump the handprimer and keep it going. It's just really hard to do that and drive :) Do you think it is trash somewhere or bad injector pump not pulling the fuel in?

you probably got junk in the lines somewhere. happened to me not too long ago. i had a small pebble lodge itself into the elbow at the bottom of the fuel tank where the line connects to it. the fuel would trickle into the line and the machine would run than die for no reason. let it sit for ten minutes and she would fire up again. check over your entire fuel system (tank, lines, fittings, filters, etc.) make sure there are no obstructions anywhere and if that checks out than have your pump looked at.

Always look for the cheap , easy stuff first...On most Komatsu equipment, they use banjo fittings on their fuel system at connections like fuel filters and fuel transfer pumps. Take the banjo fittings apart. I've found more than once that the drilled bolt that holds the banjo onto filter or fuel transfer pump is plugged up with crap from tank. Also drain the tank and flush it out so it doesn't happen again.

It could be similar to the d-20 I had the same problem, it was a small sock screen in the bottom of the pump fuel inlet that was plugged up with trash, it started surging then only idled and finally died, but was a simple fix.
