Help,,
I have a 1972 yale/towne 353 detroit backhoe.
To make a long story short, I purchased it to dig my foundation on my new house,,simple enough.
It was working just fine, but after changing the fuel filters, and checking the fuel line for leaks and no clogging,it has started to die down or at least seem to run on less than the appropriate cylinders. It will start fine sort of,,,run till it gets warm then when underload it will start to die down to the point of almost off,no matter if giving throttle or not..it will catch up itself after 20 seconds or longer and as long as i keep the throttle up it will run ok,but even then it will at times start to die as soon as I go under load whether I start to dig or move the rear or front bucket asembley, or even while in gear it will move just fine with a little throttle but then seems to die for no apparent reason. It will die to a few strokes and ...off But it will start right up most of the time right after dying. Not too familair with the 353,but it sounds like a power valve or load compensator etc,,am I close,, help,,,need to finish excavating before winter... Thanks,,, M janice

had a Detroit that acted like that. had a pinhole rusted in the fueline from the tank. it had a factory fuel pressure gauge to monitor the pressure.

A couple things to look for:
Detroit's have to have fuel presure to the fuel rails, Make sure your getting good fuel presure.
The Govener has a buffer screw that takes some of the hunting out of the engine. If the rack was out of adjustment at some time, and the owner used the buffer to make it run smooth,it will cause this as the govenor can't maintain the engine speed.

You don't say anything about what it's doing smoke wise when it's starting, running, and when it shuts down. Just the smoke can tell alot about what's happening or not happening with a diesel. Not knowing that info though let me expand on Uncles post a little on the fuel pressure. Typically the Detroits maintained backpressure on the fuel system with an orifice fitting in the return line. Usually it's the fitting screwed into the head on the return side of the fuel system. According to the Detroit manual the normal fuel pressure should be 45 to 70 psi at 1800-2800 RPM. Depeoding on where the fuel tank is there may also be a check valve on the suction side to prevent the fuel in the fuel system from draining back to the tank when the engine is shut down. If your machine has one it's possible it could be restricted. If your engine has spin on filters did you fill them completely full before putting them back on? If it has the sock type filters in the canisters did you make sure they were completely full before starting the engine? To do it right, by the book, your supposed to pull the pull the plug in the top of the filter housing and make sure everything is completely full. If you don't any trapped air in the system is gonna have to leave by going through the system which is gonna allow the injectors to catch an occasional air bubble til the system clears all the air out. This sounds to me like what's happening, either this or you maybe pinched a gasket, etc on one of the canisters and the fuel pump is sucking a little air and doing basically the same thing. Withoug knowing anything other than what you've said, the only other thing I can think of that might possibly make it run strange like you describe is for the emergency/manual shutdown to be partially tripped. I've seen this happen a few times and they don't run very well when they can't get a full breath of air every time.

Thanks so much for the info,,with regards to the smoke,,,yes when starting cold,,it will puff out a white cloudy smoke,,also when it starts to die ..the same,,and when just about to die the same.when running and warm not too much smoke ,,unless it starts to die out then it will start to grey up in color pretty dense at times.
also when it starts to deteriate in rpm instead of the flap on the top of the muffler basically staying in the float postion off of the seated not running position,, it begins to pulsate at tap close and open at different intervals,,like one or more cylinders are missing, the flap will just tap, tap tap tap, tap tap, tap tap tap, tap tap, tap,,,,etc out of time.when it dies sometimes it just turns over and over,, heavy then somelight gray smoke, then nothing at all,,if I spray it with some ether it will start and run on the ether and die,,again, then again. Finally it will catch on its own fuel supply,,, Hmmmmm mmm Help
