ok i think this a good thread to start as many people out there have different perceptions on how long a uc should last and due to the relevance on this board this is a good place to post it what knid of hours do you people get from your uc and what can be done to improve it? I will start out on our loaders we get about 1500 hour on an undercarriage. Some tips to improve undercarriage life are fairly simple and are as follows:
1) minimize changing direction from back to forth
2) plan out your route to include as little turns and unneccesary turns
3) keep your undercarriage CLEAN at the end of every day and if working in very cohesive soil such as clay every once in a while while working
4) remove rock guards if you dont need them! these will just keep the dirt in accelerating the wear on thes very expensive parts
5) check the oil in the rollers every once in a while dont just assume that they are full because you dotn see any leaks
6) keep an eye out for wear and keep your tracks adjusted properly this procedure is outlined in every operators manual for a tracked machine

PLEASE add to this list and feel free to email me with your comments or questions at rpc470@yahoo.com (join in Half-track im sure you have a lot to say on this subject)

I did not know you could add oil to roller's
I have an old td9 and one day I saw one
leaking on the trailer. Maybe I should put some in some time. Where/how do u add?

Not a u/c saver, but when reversing,
reverse at a higher range (like forward
1, reverse 2).

This saves fuel by running at a lower rpm.

HALF TRACK ,your right and to the point on your track maintance and backing when you can on moving a dozer . The type of soil and water a mechine is operated in has a lot to do with u/c life .The quailty of the u/c material is another factor .When I,was talking about the 550g and 650g u/c life these operators are some of the best FIRE FIGHTER operator in the world and true the condition they operate in are the worest you can be in ,the older tractors d4-78As and td9-Bs u/c life was a lot longer . Now around here I, am hearing the same thing from land clearing operations and timber site prep operations a lot of them are going to wheel dozers .

You mentioned removing the rock shields. I assume that if you aren't in rock then removing them is of benefit. Is the reason that they will hold in dirt and make it more difficult to clean.

Thanks for the input.

jerri- that is pretty much it the rock rails should only be used when neccessary because they will hold in dirt and accelerate wear

digger you pretty much said it all. I'll add a few things.
1. NEVER over fill LT rollers or idlers with oil.
As long as you see oil in the shaft oil fill hole that's enough. Anything over 50% filled is a waste of time & oil. You're better off to have only 40% oil, so to speck, than 65%. Over filling them can/will cause over heating & blow seals.
2. When redoing uc always make sure that ALL wear strips, plates, shims, bushings etc. that is needed/used to
hold the frames, idlers or whatever in line, you NEED to replace, buildup with weld or shim up etc. to keep from moving around.
3. Make sure your frames aren't twisted or bent.
4. Be careful when you do not replace all the uc at once. Just make sure what worn parts not replaced are somewhat flat, straight & square.
Again follow #3.
5. Watch your speed.
6. An old wise tail from the the "OLD' days. When moving to a new location that's some distance, always go in reverse.
Again, areas & conditions will very from job to job. Referr to your manual if in doudt.
Again, just my $.02 worth. HT
