jcb will not start

jcb1550b 3cx 1985?? 4.236 engine perkins?? new fuel lift pump and fuel filter no setlment bowl bleed fuel line to injectors but with 1 and 3 injectors lose and the engine stop control in the run position, i cant get fuel to come out. what do i need to do? thanks

Did your machine stop or will it not start, there is a reason for the question, if the engine was running and stopped of its own accord it was because it starved of fuel, if it ran ok and you stopped the engine and it will not start again it is possible that the fuel metering valve has stuck in the off position, if a lot of sediment has gone through the pump it is a common problem, if you have fitted a new lift pump and filter and bled the air from the system, its important to have the air out of the system, bleed the filter first, then open the two small bleed screws on the injector pump, prime the lift pump till air free fuel comes from the bottom bleeder and close it, then do the same with the top one, prime the lift pump more till the lever has no feel, open the four injector lines and spin the engine over on full throttle till it spurts out fuel, tighten the pipes and it should start, if it does not spurt out fuel with the pipes loose it would indicate that the metering valve is stuck in the stop position. To free the metering valve the top has to be removed from the pump and it is a fiddley job, if you think you are up to it I will guide you through it but first make sure your system is bleed properly, there is a small picture of the bleed screws on the pump at the link below, have your battery fully charged.

machine cut off when trying to lift the outrigger as best i recall, rpms to low is usually the cause. then would not start. i have fuel and have bleed to the two screws you mentioned. but no fuel comes out the injector line opened and spinning the motor. there was alot of gunk in the lift pump screen and the old fuel filter. so probably the problem is in the part that has the tye two small bleed screws. i guess this is where the meter valve is located. thanks

Now it sounds as you may have other problmes with the pump other than the metering valve sticking when it stalled out on you,to check that it not the MV you will have to raise the cover of the pump,take off the cables out of the way and clean around the area,loosen the two dome nuts lift the cover slightly as fuel will splash out,then lift the cover up about an inch and no more,use a strong light and look underneath,note where the spring from the throttle lever inside is attached.it has 3 optins each end and it is very important that it goes back in the same place should it come off,the picture of the pump I have posted is a right hand mount so the stop bar is on the other side on yours, go to the link below for the picture,if you had so much gunk in the system it may be better to remove the pump and have it cleaned and tested,just take the pipes off and loosen the mounting bolts,its on a master spline so no timing problem.

ajk thanks for the help. i got the pump lose by removing cables, injector lines and three mounting bolts. however it moves around but i cant get to come out of the housing that it mounts or fits into. it is lose and i can move it a little, but it wont come out. feels as if something is catching it inside the mounting housing. thank again for your help.

You have a different engine than the one I thought you should have,look on the front of the timing cover in front of the pump,if there is a round plate there remove it,if there is a nut in the middle of the timing gear have a look to see if there is a small plate secured by two bolts,if you have that type slacken off the two bolts till the plate is loose,then undo the nut in the middle,keep undoing it and it will tighten up against the plate and push the pump shaft out of the gear,the shaft is a taper fit with a key,there a a lot of different setups on the Perkins engine,there may by no push off plate and the gear should have two threaded holes to put a small puller on,leave the gear where it is and do not lift it up out of mesh or you will lose the timing, when installing the pump put a bit of super glue on the bottom key to hold it in place,line it up in relation to the gear by turning the pump shaft not the engine,disconnect the battery while the pump is off,you really need the manual for what you are doing,someone on here was offering a parts manual on DVD it would be of big help to you,my memory gets bogged down with all the stuff I have in my head and with all the different models but one look at the engine I would know what in there.

aj, thank you again. got the pump off. there where three bolts holding it on, after i got the cover removed. not to hard but tight place to work. blew out all the fuel lines. when i took the line off the pump that i believe is a fuel return to the fuel filter a small spring and post came out. i replaced the small spring 1st,then the post or stud with the long end up fitting into the bigger spring above it????? ? it feel out and i think that is how it came out???? then i removed the two dome nut and looked inside that, sort of like taking the back off a watch and you know what they say about that. however there was no gunk in it, moved a long skinny spring back and forth looked some more and put the cap back on. then removed a plate on the side and saw a gear in it and fuel, poured fuel out, it seemed clean. should i put the pump back on or i am thinking, take it to be checked out, which is a 150 mile trip. hate to put it on and it not work and have to take i back off. not fun. thank again chuckinnc

Put the cover back down and note the position of the throttle lever on the spindle and mark it,undo the nut and take the lever and any spring off,lift the cover up and push the spindle in through the cover,take the cover out of the way,note the position of the spring attached to the spindle lever and the D shaped plate mark them,its most important to put them back in the same place,do not stretch the spring either,unhook the spring and take the peg from the plate,you now see the other spring,push the plate back and see if the spring moves what its connected to,thats the metering valve,and should move freely,to remove it you remove the plate over it,take the valve out and see if there is anything blocking the spiral groove,drain the pump,take the plate off the side,blow air down the valve hole,have the pump covered with cloth to save yourself from getting soaked in diesel,clean any rust from the valve with fine emery paper,clean it and put everything back,the gasket is a sob to keep in place,glue it to the top cover,the trouble is now you can"t test it without putting it back on so good luck.
