Insurance Cost for Old Dump Truck for Towing Dozer

I've considered buying an older Chevy C60 or Ford F500 dump truck for towing my JD 450B. Also, it would be handy to have a dump truck. But, I've been told the insurance cost is so high for a dump truck, unless you're in the construction business or have money to burn, it's cost prohibitive for the tinkerer like me.
Any thoughts?

In my case I insure all my trucks and trailers on my farm policy through the farm bureau"s Farm Family ins. The large trucks (Mack 6 and 10 wheel) are registered as antique (same price as passenger). They only do work for me but they do also leave the state for shows and such. As for the ins. the agent suggested seasonal use coverage which only means low usage. I do run a small farm but the only requirement for Farm Bureau ins. is that you are a member.

I have 5 acres, a garden, a horse and some dogs. Think I could call this a farm?

Sounds reasonable to me. All my "farm" has is trees.

I use a deuce-and-a-half (with dump) that way. Too heavy for non-commercial insurance at 14,000 lbs. Costs me $225/yr for well over the minimum liability coverage. That"s for farm. Covering hauling stone for others would have been considerably more.

I"ve known guys with single axle dump trucks have trouble getting farm designation from their insurance companies.

I have a '52 GMC military duece and a half. It runs great. I suppose I could use it to pull the dozer.

There you go. Especially if it's already insured. Mine's a little newer, turbo diesel. Has no problem with my 22,000 lb. (loaded) trailer. Slow up the hills, but they weren't exactly built for speed.

Drop that huge pintle hook a few inches for civilian height. Turning radius isn't small, but you already knew that. Assuming you're 24 v. like mine, swap for 24 v. trailer bulbs and isolate your controller off of 1 of the batteries and don't forget the circuit breaker.

Originally I used a 3 axle trailer and had a hydraulic controller, which I still like better than electronic. Unfortunately it couldn't handle the extra 2 brakes my new-to-me trailer has.

My deuce has a dump under the bed, but that was installed by the dealer I bought the truck from. Handy, but if you don't need a dump, probably not worth adding. If that does interest you, give a yell and I can send some pics.

When I rebuilt my front axle awhile back, I installed parts packaged in '52, on a '69 Kaiser! I can't imagine a better farm truck. If you only have 6 brakes and want a hydraulic controller, let me know. It's still hooked up, haven't bothered to find a plug for the master cylinder.

8 mpg, depending on where you're operating it, in my experience. Off road, less.

CL,

My 1968 Ford F600 dumptruck cost me $260 for 6 months here in Arkansas. I'm not a business owner, just insured it for my personal use. Like you I plan on hauling my Case 530CK backhoe and/or my JD 440 crawler.

Brad

I'm in Arkansas also. Would you email me and tell me what company you use for your insurance? I could probably afford 260.00 for 6 months.
Thanks

Hi CL,

Just talked to my Chief Financial Office (wife) and she told me insurance was actually $55 a month which works out to $330 for 6 months. Sorry about the mistake, we were originally quoted $260 but when it was all said and done it ended up being more. We use State Farm Insurance and our agent is in Pine Bluff. We live north of there in Jefferson but found him to be the easiest to deal with.

Where bouts in Arkansas are you?

Brad

CL,

I've driven throuth your area probably once. I'm originally from Nebraska, now working at the Arsenal at Pine Bluff.

We drove our F600 from Dallas to Jefferson with a load of engines for some of our projects. Rather interesting drive to say the least! Steering isn't the best but we made it.

Have you found a truck to buy yet or just looking?

Still looking. I'm sure one will come up if I decide to go this route. Depends on whether or not I get an affordable insurance quote.
Maybe I should consider not having a truck with dump. Not sure if I'll convince them I have a farm...

I talked to a lot of people around here and pretty much if your truck has a flat bed with dump BUT no sides then its not a dump truck and insurance is even cheaper. Dump trucks have higher insurance rates than flat beds. In the last year or so I've seen several 2 ton flat bed trucks for sale. We got the dump truck simply because our renter in Dallas owed us money and this was how he caught up past rent. Works for me. Its nice having a dump truck around. Amazing what you can use them for!

Do you already have a trailer? If so is it pintel style or round ball? I'm going to be adding a receiver type and use a pintel attachment when I finally find a trailer to use. I'd really like to get something that will hold both the crawler and backhoe at the same time. Of course that would cost more as well.

The last time I checked on it which was back in 2000 it cost me around $1200 a year but a friend told me last year it was going to cost him around $3000 a year. As soon as you say dump they stick it to you and hard. Its because of all the windsheilds that get claimed to have been broken by rocks etc from dump trucks

Call your agent and find out how much it will be..If the truck is only used occasionally they might give you a break. One can hope anyhow....

Wow. Before buying my truck I asked about insurance and tags. Often I don't use it for a month or more. So just sitting there, my yearly cost is $193.10 + $225.00 for insurance. Strikes me as real reasonable.
