Have a 1964 1010 JD crawler diesel. It was stored for ten years so we decided to restore it as it only had 5000 hours. We are the original owners. This machine never missed a beat and ran very well. Upon dismantling the engine some water damage was on the crank but cracks were found between cylinders. Now we find out this was a bad design and plagued this model. So any fix? We have already spent lots on new parts. Does anyone know if it will be ok to reassemble and run or is there new blocks available. We had been told to convert to a JD 350 motor, will this fit? Its so sad as this ran so well for us. Thanks Mike

The 1010 motor uses the bolt pattern of the older two cylinder engines like the 420, 430, etc. The later 350 that replaced the 1010 has a newer bolt pattern and will not fit. A 2010 engine will bolt right in though - in fact a 2010 gas engine is the same bore and stroke as a 1010 diesel.

In regard to the cracks - if they are in the block itself and not the deck-plate - I wouldn't worry about it. When I was a Deere mechanic, I think just about every 1010 and 2010 I ever rebuilt was cracked in that area. They seemed to crack to a certain point and stop without doing any damage.

If you need a deck-plate, they are available new.

These engines have whats called a liner plate. If you look closely at the top of the block there will be a flat plate with a gasket under it. The liners are brazed to the plate. If you pry up the liner plate the cylinders will come up with the plate. Last I knew, they were still available from Deere I built one a couple of years ago and had a terrible time making it run smoothly. I found that the Deere service manual was misprinted on engine timing. I had to resort to an IT manual from the old Farm and Fleet..And no a 350 wont fit. They were a horse of their own..
