310G wont start

I have a Case 310G dozer. The engine quit running for what a thought was a low fuel condition, it sort of spit and sputtered and then stopped. I put additional fuel in the tank and tried to start it but all it does is turn over, doesn’t try to start. I thought there may be air or dirt in the lines, so I started at the fuel tank sediment bowl and worked my way forward to the fuel filter, disconnecting lines and blowing compressed air through to eliminate any obstructions. Then I put everything back together and forcing air into the fuel tank from my air compressor, attempted to force fuel through the system. I get fuel to the filter, but that seems to be as far as it will go. I open the bleeder on top of the fuel filter, air comes out, and then fuel, close the bleeder, spray starting ether into the air cleaner to get it started and it will run. But it seems to only run as long the fuel is in the filter, once that is used up, it quits and won’t start again.

I spent four hours on this and I am out of ideas. Is there a fuel pump somewhere that is not drawing the fuel through the system? Any help on what I can do to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Bob

It might be possible that when the tank emptied there was sediment on the bottom that got sucked in and then clogged the filter(s). Did you actually check them or have you ever replaced them? Make sure the petcock (usually located at the tank), isn't turned off or clogged. Also I ran my loader out of gas a while back when I was going up a hill. I had to put over 20 gallons of fuel in it before the level was high enough to force the fuel from the low setting tank in the back up to the filter canisters in front. After that I vented both canisters until fuel freely flowed from both. Then I cracked the input line to the pump until fuel was bled there. Then I cracked three of the six injector lines until fuel was observed leaking from them (after turning it over briefly). Finally, after retightening the injector lines it fired right up and ran fine thereafter.

Give it a shot, good luck.
