Case 450 - engine won't crank

I've just made a deal to buy a 1978 Case 450 crawler with the 207c.i. diesel, contingent upon my being able to start and evaluate it. It has not been run in 8-10 years, but was stored inside until being drug outside this past spring. I installed a fresh 850CCA battery, new fuel filters, and fresh diesel (from a 5gal can). The engine cranked normally for about 3 seconds (at least 6-8 revolutions) then stopped abruptly, as if it had 'hydraulic'd'. Repeated attempts to crank only resulted in a couple of successes, and these were very labored. Starter was HOT - I pulled it and had it disassembled, inspected, and tested at the starter shop - OK. Pulled the valve cover - valves were free (could open with the heel of my palm) and engine was very clean inside. Radiator is still full of coolant. Engine oil is full and not fried. I'm thinking that it's not the engine that's binding but maybe one of the (2) hyd pumps. Driveshaft turns by hand. I'm confident that the cranking sys is healthy. SOMETHING is causing a huge drag on the cranking system. I've got to make a decision on this very soon, but I don't want to buy a turd - any suggestions out there?

i think the best was to start an engine that has sat for a long time is to soak the top of the piston with oil i like to do this for about a week before attempting to turn them over seem to prevent this or scored cyl.

Since the machine has set for so long,it's highly likely that the cylinders have surface rusted. Try taking injectors out and then turning it over. Squirt some oil in cylinders if it still won't turn over. Good Luck! Tim

Thanks for everyone's input - if Tim's theory is correct perhaps the rings (in the boogered cyl) have scraped up enough rust to 'pack' around the perimeter of the piston at TDC. Unless there's a trick for removing the pencil-type injectors I'm a little more inclined to pull the cyl head for inspection. Two questions: 1)IS there a technique for pulling the injectors without a special puller? 2)If I DO pull the head and find a badly rusted cyl (or two?) will I run a risk of pushing a sleeve up out of the block while attempting to crank the engine (with the head off)? I don't want to wade too deeply into this - if I pass on the purchase I'm obligated to leave the machine as complete (and assembled) as I found it.
Thanks again

Stan had some good thoughts on water in the engine. Here is something else maybe you can try. Try it at your own risk though, as I don't know the side effects, but I do it on my Case 350 crawler and this was setup by the previous owner. I run two batteries in series to start it, then run them in parrallel to run at 12 volts. I think my starter is about shot, but this has worked for more than a year now. In series, it runs at 24 volts and really spins over well, but with 12 volts, even 2 new batteries, it just doesn't spin over quick enough.

Good luck, hope you get her running.

Jon

Sounds like water may have entered the motor. Was the exhaust covered? If you remove the oil drain plug to drain a small amount of oil out you will be able to see if there is water in the oil. Is it possible to get to the flywheel and turn it backwards to see if the motor turns easier. Stan
