Alvin, are you sure it isn't just a port relief valve not holding? You can test the valve in place with a hand hyd pump with a gauge on it and set the port relief valves that way too.

Thanks Bob, it could be a port valve. The boom leaks down also. Will the p/valves be past the control valves toward the pump? I have moved out of Ms. to Ladonia, just west of Ft. Benning, Columbus, Ga. and Phenix City, Al. Lots of building going on here. Have nice day. Alv

Oh, so your Alvin from Ga now Eh. The port relief valves are just that, they are in the ports to the cyl's out past the spool valves. They protect the cyl from external force when the valve is in hold. The main relief valve is between the spools and the pump, it limits system pressure and will not affect cyl drift in hold.

If you are talking about a recent 580M backhoe it is unlikley for the port valves to give trouble,I would be more inclined to check if the cylinders are leaking internally,if the boom is dropping have you checked if it will hold the machine up when you lift it with the bucket,if it won"t the oil is bypassing the piston in the cylinder,to check the pressures of the port valves the main regulator valve needs to be locked, set the pressure of the port valves and reset the main regulator, there is a snap connector on the main pipe coming from the pump,I don"t know the vaules off hand.
Good Luck
AJ

AJK, it is a 2001 year mod. I will check out the cylinders for internal leakage. Thanks, and seasons greetings. Alv
