Sounds like it is an HD 20, not a 21. In my opinion the HD 20 is a great machine, I should know since I own one and have done lots of land clearing with it.

I doubt you will be able to test it at a sale but watch out for slipping trans clutches and cracked cyl liners. If that 21000 engine ever starts cracking liners you have to replace the block. I don't know why but they just keep on cracking the same one.

Since it has the 6-110 Detroit all I can say is don't buy it unless it's in extreemely good shape. The parts for the machine itself aren't all that hard to come by but parts for the 110 engine are getting scarce and expensive. I was helping a buddy out a month or so back looking for some blower parts for one of them with the roots type blower on it. There were only two parts guys at our local dealership that even know anything about them and they have both been there forever. They could get me a new blower but it was in the thousands of dollars. Plus, if I understood them right, Detroit sold of the 110 series years ago so while they are the OEM for the engine they no longer actually support it. The 110's were OEM engines in alot of the old Euclid equipment also but as the engines in them went out they usually got repowered with another engine if that tells you anything. We used to have a customer with alot of the old Fiat-Allis equipment. Many of them came with the Allis engines in them origionally. When one of his went out he normally found a Cummins to repower with. Good luck with whatever you decide to buy.

I think that is both Billy. The Detroit is a reliable engine, now there is one potential down side. The power settings, if it was installed and set up by a good detroit man the power should be adjusted right for the AC 21. If it has just been droped in and turned loose it may be okay or it may have too much torque for the power train that has to stand behind it. It's a gamble when you buy repowered machinery. Talk to someone that knows detroits and how to set up the speeds and power on them before you buy. Then you have someone to correct any problems that may come with it.

The 6-110 engine was original in the HD-20. Production of the HD-20 ended in 1955. Try to check the serial number it should tell whether it is a 20 or 21. Parts for either are availible but you need to look. Also remember big machines use big expensive parts no matter what brand or how old. In other words there all good till they break. Chuck
