Saw a good post earlier about preserving undercarriages. How about final drives? I've seen a lot of posts on this site and others about tearing up final drives in their machines. What tears them up and how do you prevent doing this?

the most common break on older machines is hard hits lots of people pull up to a tree or a rock and if it dont move they back up and ram the object putting way to much stress on the axle or the bull gear on alot of older machines the final drive is the weakest part newer machines have planetary gears with no axle outside the houseing plus hydrostats take more punishment on the newer ones just keep the oil changed make sure water dont get in it or wire rapped around the inner oil seal goodluck
