Im going to look at a older (70's maybe) Case 580 (??) tomorrow. I am told that it has been sitting for a couple years after the owner died and it doesnt run. It did run fine when the owner was still alive. What should I check when I look at it? What volt is the electrical system so I can take a battery? i would like to know if the engine is free or not. Did the 580's have one seat or two? This one has the roof with no glass. How can I tell the difference between a 530 and a 580?

Check the seals on the hydraulics if you can. Inspect the frame where the backhoe mounts to the machine and look for cracks or any hairline fractures. Same for around the cylinder mounts on backhoe and loader. Check the oil and smell it. If it smells like anything other than oil you might have a problem. Some of the things I look at real quick when buying equipment.

The Case 530 had one boom cylinder that was enclosed in the boom. The 580 had outside the boom cyl. JW

Hi Tweeter,

The 580 (no letter following) I'm working on for the guy who just bought it is 12v., single seat, around 1970. The seat didn't go up when we looked at it. Guy demonstrating the hoe was pretty small. When I sat there I couldn't believe anybody could operate it like that, knees banging your chin. Was just dirty.

There's an identification tag on the engine that'll tell you what you're looking at. Left side, IIRC. Also a tag on the right frame, but that identifies the loader.

If you buy it, make sure you get an operator's manual. I've got one due any day now from ebay. It'll tell you what you need to know about maintenance.

This one didn't have functioning brakes which made for an interesting trip on and off the trailer. Turned out one had a leaky oil seal and the other was just dirty and out of adjustment. Neither needed parts, other than an oil seal. Simple systems.

So far, Case is great with parts and help. They pulled a new kit off the shelf so I could compare lining thickness. Guess you know that non-operation is hard on anything that seals.

Good luck.

A friend has one of them, so I know a little about them. His is 12 volt, single seat that flips around for working the hoe. You have no steering on his if the power steer fluid is low. His is a 580B. Hope that little bit helps, I had fun unloading it the clutch didn't release so it was a jam it in gaer and hold on for dear life and cross my fingers.
