Cat Track Adjustment

I have a 977 H Cat, 1965. I have the service manual and in the section "Track Roller Frame" it says to release the pressure off the hydraulics by using the relief valve and "grease" will escape. Later on in the chapter under "Adjusting Track" it says to force SAE 30 lubricating oil through the fitting in the ball check valve.

I had been told before that you used grease from a grease gun to adjust the track, so do you use grease of SAE 30 lubricating oil? If you use the SAE 30 oil how do you force it into the valve? Is there a special gun?

Thanks,
Tom

Use regular grease as AJK says. The correct tension for sealed and lubricated tracks is to adjust untill tight, mark the idler and track frame then back off 1/2" for machines with two carrier rollers(yours) or 3/8" for machines with one carrier roller. This is okay for all tracks.

I have noticed that mistake in a lot of Cat manuals, use the same grease as you use for the rest of the machine.
