I have a 440 crawler with gas engine that had not been run for 2 years. Didn't take too much too get it running, but after about 10 minutes the exhaust manifold was cherry red. Any suggestions?I'm not too familiar with Deere. Usually run old Farmall's.

I have a repair manual (over 300 pages) for both the 440 wheel tractor and the 440 crawler. They had 2 cylinder motors. You say yours has a 3 cylinder? Are you sure it is a 440? I can sell the manual on CD for $65 (price includes shipping).

I have a ford 9n that had set up for about a years when i bought it. the my neighbor down the road hauled it up out of the weeds with his winch truck and said he would tune it up, It had an exhaUST VALVE THAT STUCK REAL BAD. Mt neighbor who is an old roustabout, about as old as cable tools. would fill the cylinder with diesel fule every night and then start it in the morning. it blew at lot of blu smoke but after 4 days the valve hasnt stuck since then (3 years with only occaidsional use. If you can get it bathed in diesel fuel you can probably unstick it. Caution crankcase oil dilution. bon chance

Check your air cleaner, and clean out the carb jets. Also check that there is not any air leaks in between the carb and intake manifold. Take some carb cleaner and spray the air/fuel area after the carb, if she wants to die, you have a leak. Please do this with a cool motor when you first start it up, I don't want to hear that it caught on fire. This is how I checked leaky intakes on Harley Davidsons. Make shure your timming isn't advanced to much.

Sounds like she's running lean, make sure carbs not gummed up. Try pulling choke out and see if it cools down combustion and reduces heat at manifold. Good Luck

If it hasn't run for a couble of years you might have an exhaust valve sticking. good luck

Thanks for the replys. All were good suggestions, but unfortunately, it seems to be a sticking exhaust valve. Don't guess there is a quick fix for that is there?

Get some wd 40 or better stuff take off the breather hose at carb start engine run at fast idle and spray right into the carb until it almost dies then let it smooth out and do again repeat several times and then spray untill it dies and let it set over night. Best if engine isn't to hot when you do this. More than likely you will have to tear it down but this is worth a shot. good luck
