I am doing some work on a TD6 dozer and im wondering if they can be started on diesel from cold. I tried to start it on a 30 degree C day but didnt seem to even fire. The starter motor get hot very quickly also. The reason i havnt tried to start it on petrol is because the carby is full of dirt, water and rust and the maggie doesnt spark. Some sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

oh do i know why you should also not use ether on the engine to start it either. I bought a crawler that was started with either several times, i do not know how many times someone else started it that way, and well it cracked the whole head everywhere. As hector suggested, i would work on getting the gasoline part fixed quickly. You have to build heat in the machine, oil pressure, a it of water temperature, and then switch it over to diesel.

Yeah , that starter is designed for petrol compression ratios. A diesel would need a starter about twice as powerful. Little wonder it gets hot!!
