would anyone have a diagram of the fuel pump on a leyland 4\98\NT. How the fuel pump is hooked up? The stop control and the throttle levers on the top of the pump. Any help would be appreciated.

If your machine is 1984 it should have a Perkins 4.236 engine, the injector pump is fitted on the left hand side sitting in the seat, the cab doors open backwards,if its a 1979 it would have the Leyland engine, injector pump on the right hand side, the cab doors slide backwards, that machine was known as a Powertrain,it has the same setup as the as the 84 one except the engine, the layout been, engine, torque, shuttle box, gearbox, propshaft and back axle, the machine before 1979 was known as a TC,it had a torque convertor, the shuttle, gearbox and axle were all one unit,it was built on a Nuffield tractor, the JCB Powertrain is the first backhoe to be built on a purpose built chassis rather than on a farm tractor as was done previous, what problems are you having,I"m in the UK and there is plenty JCB here.

AJK Thanks for answering.I am in Newfoundland, Canada. On the machine I have the injector pump is on the right hand side sitting in the seat. The cab doors open backwards. Not sure about the power train setup but I took the transmission out and had to put 4 new foward clutches in it. There was the engine, torque convertor, shuttle reverser, gearbox,a very small shaft{actually it was more like two u-joints and yokes close together}and the axle.I have the parts book for the machine but it just shows the parts and no information. On the front page of the book the serial #'s are listed there and they are
Machine Serial No. 3C 290200
Engine Serial No. 4/98NT/2066/77907
Gearbox Serial No. 13027/880/329
Torque Convertor Serial No. 3632
Axle Serial No. 01178
The problem right now is there is fuel weeping from the top of the injector pump were the throttle lever is bolted down.I think after some questions it is a CAV injector pump? After scrapping paint off the pump I can see it is CAV.
I would like to I.D. this engine for sure to know what questions to ask or order parts!!!!
Thanks for your help
Darren

The machine you have is a JCB 3CX Mk1,that is the first of the new shape machines, the engine can be Leyland or Perkins, yours would be a Leyland with the pump on the right, very good engine, that is a common fuel leak on the pump,it just a couple of o"rings on the spindle, you have to take the top cover off, take everything out of the way,the throttle spindle has to be pushed down through the cover as you lift it off,you must note where the spring under the cover is attached either end as there is several options, the stop spindle comes off with the cover, reseal it too, glue the gasket to the cover as it is hard to keep in place otherwise,I have posted a cutaway picture at the link below and the address is there in case the link don"t work

If the controls are on top of the pump you have a CAV rotary, most JCBs had an inline Simms, the controls would be on the side and the pipes coming off the top in a line, the CAV rotary has the pipes coming off the back, there are two levers on top of the CAV,the front one is the stop control and the back one the throttle, usually there was a bracket to carry the cables,it faling my memory to remember exactly what went where, some of the CAV had an electric stop switch with one wire going to it,the feed pipe coming from the filter goes into the back of the pump and the return to the front behind the mounting flange,I do not have a book, someone else may have.

AJK if you are there you seem to have the info on the JCB for sure. I wonder if you can help me out. I have posted a few questions before and I am getting confused about the type of engine that is in the machine.I purchased the machine awhile ago and it is my first one so if I seem a little stupid about the old thing I am! The machine is surpose to be a 1984 then someone told me that by the serial number which is 290200 it would make it 1979 or before and the engine serial is 4\98\NT etc. that the engine would be a Leyland. Is there any tell tale things that I can look for on the machine and the engine to tell me for sure? By the way the injection pump is a CAV. I scraped the paint off the side of the pump and could see the plate.I am beginning to think that someone changed the plate with the serial numbers for whatever reason!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Darren
