MY 955K CAT LOSES TRANNY FLUID.IT SEEMS TO MIGRATE TO THE STEERING CLITCH COMPARTMENT.I M NOT SURE,BUT IT POSIBLEY HAPPENS WHEN PARKED ON A SLANT (REAR DOWNHILL).IT WOULD NOT MOVE ON 2 OCCASIONS;THE FIRST TIME I HAD TO ADD FLUID (CAT 30W)TO THE TRANS;THE SECOND TIME I DRAINED SOME OUT OF THE STEERING CLUTCHES BECAUSE IT WAS OVER FULL,AND PUT IT IN THE TRANS.IT WAS PARKED FOR MAYBE 2 WEEKS EACH TIME.OTHERWISE IT WORKS FINE. Forgot to mention the breathers, make sure that they are not blocked causing a pressure build up.

AJ, the steering pump is mounted to the back of the trans pump. If the screen gets clogged the steering pump will suck oil from the trans pump at the shaft seal.

Mark, take the floor plates off and follow the steering pump suction line(the big one) back to the steering clutch case. Beside where it fastens there is a round plate with two flats. Under the plate is a suction screen. It will likely look like a grey pumpkin and be full of worn brake lining. Clean it out and drain the steering clutch oil down and put it back in the trans. If you have to clean it constantly you will need to reline the brake bands or keep cleaning it.

Its sounds like the seal on the pinion has failed if the transmission oil is leaking into the back end, drain the oils and look for any metal on the plugs, check the filters of both for metal filings, its unusal for the seal to fail so badly that the oil is just flowing past under gravity unless the bearing is failing, transmission removal is required to replace the seal!
