looking at a 1940ish Cat D9. the owner wanted to scrap it but i stopped him. ran and drove when parked. it was parked cause it threw a track!! any way, i have a couple of ways to get it home but i was wondering on the approximate weight. it has a cable lift blade, and just a single spool drum for the blade, nothing else. thanks for any help or links to spec pages. thehickdaddy

Are you looking at a Cat D-9 or a red TD-9 built be the other outfit?

Billy's right, the first D9D was made between 1955 and 1956 and production on the D series kept up til 1961. They would have a serial number prefix either 18A (direct drive transmission) or or 19A (Torque converter drive) through '59. There's also a 34A from '59-'61 with a Power Shift transmission. Your probably looking at one of the earlier 18 or 19A's though. The weights on the ones I've listed start at 56,765 and go up to 59,837, all without the blade. Typically the weight on a blade that size will be in the 15,000lb range, plus or minus depending on what design it is.

I believe the D-9 did not go into production until the mid to late 1950's, see if you can find the serial number tag on the machine left rear or left rear of engine block, that will help ID what you are looking at. If from the 40's it could be a D8-2U, which is probably 40,000 lbs with cable control and blade +, a D-9 with cable control unit and blade would probably be over 50,000 lbs, have no exact info on hand except bare tractor weight of an earlier D8 8R at 34,175lbs, with no attachments.
