I"ve got a Komatsu track loader and two of the carrier rollers need building up. Experts have told me that I need to preheat these rollers before I weld them. Is this absolutely necessary or is there another way?
Cheers!

you want save enough to pay for your trouble, buy new hulls from an aftemarket dealer (BercO)
If you do build them up first mike the bores with the bushings removed, then thake them to a machine shop to have the bores resized as they will swell in.I have welded them up. be sure to put new Orings seals on the Duo Cone seals

I have built some of them up with reg wire feed,
Then the last pass use hard surface.
you can use stick 7018 & hard surface the last pass, Some Hard s should not have more than 1 pass.
It will crack & can brake pieses out of it.
There are lots or diff ways to do it, I never took the idler off unite.
I would go with the wire feed.

From what I've read you can build up rollers without necessarily taking them apart or dealing with heat distortion. I believe you have to submerge half of the roller in water to keep it cool and then weld intermittently using not too high amperage and supposedly it works out fine. Here's an interesting thread from the acmoc board on the subject, good luck.
