I posted this question a few months ago just figured since this time of the year more people are on the computer I would get some more responses or updates. I am looking to buy a mini excavator around a 7000 lb machine, I have lots of ditching to do and also putting in some culverts. So on these mini excavators whats a good brand and whats bad. I went to another auction yesterday scoping them out. There was lots of Kubotas, Mitsubisis, Hitachi, Taecheuci and also gray markets, some had brand names I never heard of like Airmen. One guy told me to stay away from Mitsubishi cause they are hard to get parts for. Ok so I am open to any info on these machines.

i have a i.h.i. 28j 6500 lbs and i bought it with 3400 hours and now 3900 hours on it.. i am very happy with it, but now i am buying a bigger one.. yeahhh a mitsubishi.. mm45 and that is same as 304.5 caterpillar, mm35 is same as caterpillar 303.5 so parts should be easy to get after knowing that.

if you call finning and ask for mitsubishi parts they say huhhh and dont have a clue.

in the 90,s all caterpillar excavators were built in japan and small or minis were sold as mitsubishi, and bigger ones as caterpillar..

then in 1999 i do believe they formed a new deal and painted them yellow instead of green and called them caterpillar instead.

a few updates to the cab etc may be a little different, but all in all it should be same parts.

early to mid 90,s mitsu used kubota engines in some models, or others should have fairly common mitsu engines in them,

or at least thats what i have read so far!

Joe,

I have a Komatsu PC60-7, with rubber tracks and blade. It has been a great machine and is a joy to run. Parts & service are readily available. This is a 15,000 lb machine, but I heard the smaller Komatsus are just as good.

Be sure to consider a blade, as you will find it to be very handy and makes the machine very stable when digging.

Good luck,
Scott

I think it would hard to go wrong with a Bobcat. Dealers seem to be everywhere and all the rental places use them. I rented one once and was very impressed.

Ihave a Kubota KX-41 -a little smaller than what you want. I bought it with 1500 hrs on it and have put 300 hrs on it in 2 yrs. I am well satisfied with it. It runs and works great. Have not had to repair anything.
