Hello fellas. I'm new to this forum. I find the depth of knowledge here incredible. I have 5 acres raw land that I want to improve the road, dig the septic field, dig foundation for house, and contour and clear land. I wonder if a 1970 JD 555 would fit the bill. Seller says machine has 4 in 1 bucket, 14ft back hoe attachment, new hydro trans, new under carriage, chains, sprockets, rollers, tracks & new paint, decals, batteries, hoses, 500 hrs on new factory rebuilt motor. Any comments on this year of JD? If all this work has been done, would $21,500 (US dollars) be an unreasonable price? Thanks in advance. Darrell

Hello Jonathon. I too wonder why someone would put all those $s into a machine just to sell it. I also wonder why any machine is for sale. I do have the benefit of a few gray hairs and have the misfortune of buying someone elses problems. I have gone through archived posts on this site and I sense JDs are perhaps a little under-built. I truly appreciate your opinion. Thanks djm

Every machine and brand has its quirks.. I'm just familiar with Deere... thanks to 20 years at a dealership... There are alot of good models out there... I've just seen alot of 550's (except for the newer G's H's and J's) with bad transmissions.. and because they have a torque converter, people buying them dont notice the problem until its too late...

Warming these machines up and then pushin' in the pile for 10 - 15 minutes. Would this identify these torque converter problems?

Yes... It should also overpower the foot brake in 1 st speed and also in 2nd (barely)-- Forward and reverse... The problems with these usually arent with the converter itself but with internal leakage in the powershift portion of the transmission. Oil is routed thru shafts and manifolds and sealing rings and with ANY wear , clutch packs start slipping and leaking etc... Make sure you check reverse speeds also. If your really interested . I'd buy a transmission filter and tell the guy you want to remove the old one and cut it open. Look in the bottom of the filter canister (its under the seat and a pain to remove-- overlooked quite often) Look for grey looking oil ...any metal particles.. ANYTHING other than oil in there would make me say "hmmmmm "... Also as the transmission oil is shared with the steering clutches, a failure of any sort in a steering clutch dumps contaminated oil into the transmission and vice-versa.. so whan u have a transmission problem or steering clutch problem , you are pretty much guaranteed a combination of failures in progress... Can ya tell I'm not a big fan of older 550's ?? And then when you go to buy transmission parts...be seated when you hear the prices !!

And the seller is getting rid of it because its making him too much ,money I'm sure... Transmissions in those are a big concern. You may end up with a 21,500 dollar lawn ornament in short time... If youre not sure about 550's I'd stay clear...
