What is your IH T-340 brake experience?

How much trouble have you had with the ball/ramp disk brakes on the T-340 crawler? I have no experience on the crawlers but tons of experience with 10 or more IH wheel tractors. They work very well when cleaned up but sooner or later they either lock up with the lightest touch or you have to stand on them to get them to work at all. If the tractor sits over winter it is a sure thing they will give trouble in the spring. They are easy to take apart and clean on a tractor but on the 340 you have to take the tracks off and am wondering how often they give trouble on a T-340.

Thanks for the help. Sounds about the same as wheel tractors. Some are pretty trouble free and some are more moody. I mostly was wondering if they were the same thing and it sounds like they are. Thanks again.

I've had my T-340 for ~20 years or so. Had the brakes gone through at one point because I had to have the tracks off anyway for another problem. The foot brake has always worked fine. The steering brakes (one and the same with the foot brakes but applied one side at a time) are often sticky. i.e. they take a huge effort to get it to turn until they have been used enough to get out the kinks. The main problem is the tractor is sitting 99.9% of the time. 'Course it would be worn out if I used it all the time, but I think they get corrosion and don't work well 'til they've been used for a while. My guess is that the balls get stuck in one place in the detent and they don't rotate/expand correctly until they have been used enough. That's been my experience at least.

I"ve had no problems with the brakes on my TD-340A in over 20 years. I don"t use it except occasionally, and nothing ever sticks or locks up. I did one replacement when I had the machine apart for bottom work.
