Hi all,

Looking for some advice. I have to clear land for building and do a little roadbuilding. Most of the trees are pine and cedar 3" to 12"dia. What weight/horsepower range do I need to look at? I'm on a budget of course, so I've been looking at IH500's, Deere 350/450's. Also concerned about durability and maintenance. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Hi, Eric in Calif. If you can find one in your price bracket, you won't beat a Cat 941B with 4-in-1 bucket and rippers. Around 12 tons and about 90 hp, powershift and as good a track loader as anybody ever pumped fuel into.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I just bought a Dresser TD7 with a hyd ripper on the back, comparable to a Cat D3 (at least in weight & horsepower) to clear 20 acres I have with 3"-10" trees and brush. I will say I think its too small for the job, it will do the job, just will take longer with the trees. To help with the trees over 6" in diameter, I am digging them up with a backhoe and using the crawler for the smaller stuff, pushing the piles and leveling. For what you are wanting the 40hp Mitsubishi B2 and similar crawlers will be too small. It really depends on how big of a job you have for it, how long you need it, and what you can afford to spend. For my job, I wish I could have afforded a D4 or similar sized Komatsu (around the 100hp mark,) but I did buy a good machine that works well, and I am learning in the process. If you have to transport it frequently, factor that into the price...

Search for past posts by Seann. He has been a great help to many on this site with the same questions.
