we have decide to go after a sunken cat and we need your help. sterling was the last guy sinking in the seat of this cat in 1957 and now that he is 80 years old he would like to sit in the seat one more time after we salvage the cat. sterling took these picture of the cat sinking and we need to know how far from shore it would be. since i only have 12 years of schooling (which doesn't mean i have grade 12) i need someone to do the math on what the distance would be. i'll post the pictures of the sunken cat on my website under what the KING DID TODAY.

I was checking out your site. I sure am impressed with your computer skills. You allready raised up one old sunken crawler didn't you ? How bad is this stuff after being down there all those years ?

You would sure get a kick out of all my uncles old stuff he has at his gravel pit. D2,D6,D7 bucyrus erie drag lines it all has to be from before 1960. Some may even still run ? If you ever get down to Ohio I could give you a tour.

Is this cat on the East side of a lake to the south end of the lake? out from a river or outlet?
Kind of North West Mostley West of the mouth of that outlet?

Just thaught of some more things.
They were halling fuel & goods on the trail South of the outlet & went West on the ice to go around the outlet that was open & running real good at that time of year.
They drove out on the ice went west & then swung North to go around the mouth of the outlet,
They never mad it. Am I wrong on this, Or Right?
Let me know. Thanks.

Here is the calculation that has been mentioned to figure distance, a3 + b3 = c3. you have to have 2 sides of the triangle to get the 3rd.( the 3 represents squared )

That isn't quite accurate. If this photo were an arial shot of the scene, all of the measurments shown would lie in the same plane (two dimensions) and your equation would work. As this picture has height width and depth you need to account for all three dimensions. Acconting for each of these, your equation would be x^2+y^2+z^2=d^2 of which there is not enough information from these pictures to solve for a distance between points.

Do you mean 3= squared or cubed?

I just realized why you asked that, my bad, it should not have been a 3, it should have been a 2. so here is an example:

a = 30'
b = 40'
c = ?

a^2 = 900 +
b^2 = 1600 =
c^2 2500

the square root of 2500 is 50

c=50'

Squared. a squared + b squared = c squared

You must keep in mind that the formula you quote can only be used for a right triangle.

How deep is the water & how thick is the ice? A chain saw and a large magnet on rope shouldn't take forever to find it. Once you have the magnet on it you can slide the hook down the rope to snatch the cat. What is the bottom? How much will this machine have settled in all those years? Sorry- more questions than answers.

I agree that an accurate measurement of the distance to the shore cannot be obtained. Perhaps things would be different with an arial shot of the sinking. You might want to consider a magnetometer. You can make one of these with pvc pipe, copper wire, kerosene, a power supply, headphones, and a few switches.

KoO,
I don't think you have enough or the right measurements to make an accurate estimate. You need two sides of a triangle to get the third. Good Luck! I follow your site on a regular basis.

If one of the original people located it and knew the water was actually 120 ft deep, you may be able to narrow the search with a depthfinder, at least you'd be able to check your calculations at the first stop if the water wasn't deep enough or too deep where you calculate the spot in sunk. I don't know what the shape of the bottom is in the area but that would make a difference.

More then likely you could find a map that has the depth information of the lake on it. Topo map?
