I have 5 Acres raw land that is on a 'moderate' hillside. I plan on buying a crawler/loader with a 4n1 bucket and a backhoe. I will dig in my septic field & tank as well as dig ground work for a house. I will shape and landscape and improve the road to justify this purchase to my wife ;-) Here is my question... I posted a couple of weeks ago inquiring about a JD555 (thanks fellas for those opinions received). I am now looking at a 1980ish CAT 931. BTW I think it would be prudent to add that I plan on selling any machine I may buy after a couple of years once this planned work is complete. I looked into the archives re: the 931 and found great info. Does this machine have dry steering clutches? I ask because this machine may sit for extended periods between runs (I don't like doing that to any machinary). Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Darrell

I was wondering if that was Ont Canada or Ont California! Now I know. My Father hails from around Lindsay. Bob I have read lots of posts on this site and I know you are a Cat guy. I'll ask for your unbiased opinion though. Do you like this machine? I know there are lots of choices. I just want a steady, solid, dependable machine. If you know where I can get one for free less 10%, that would be even better LOL. Darrell

Richmond Hill, Darrel. They are a good machine, should be lots out there, try to find one owner is selling and not cleaned up so you can try it out. They are the same as a D3B but the frame is different to mount the loader frame. Are you in town? coming out to visit Daughter in NW(citadel) next summer.

Thanks for the quick replies Bob. I am right in the city actually, about 3-4 miles South of the community your daughter lives in. This machine I will buy will live on my place in the Kootenays in British Columbia. Thats where I am headed once I retire. Darrell

I'm on the other side of the Rockies Bob-just outside Creston. Be sure to let me know when you are out West this summer. I'm sure I will owe you at least a coffee for your advice. Darrell

Darrel in Resourse Rich Alberta, some are dry and some have oil clutches. Look at the side of the steering clutch case near the final drive fill plug for a small 1/4NPT allen head plug to check the oil level. Then if you find one you like well enough to test out drive it around and it should steer with a Light Toe Pressure on the peddals. If you buy one that will not doe that come on back and we will tell you how to fix it.
Later Bob/ freezing in the dark down here in Ont.
