My brother purchased a John Deere 550 dozer a few months ago to clean up a farm. We are having a problem with the hydraulic tank slowly loosing fluid into the transmission during operation over-filling the transmission. We are also having a problem with transmission getting hot after 3-4 hours of operation. We completely serviced the machine, but did not completely resolve the problem.

the hydraulic pump drives off of the transmission underneath the machine. Remove the pump and reseal or replace it. Is the transmission slipping ?? is that whats causing the heat ?? There are 2 cooler lines that run into the bottom of the radiator.. check those to see if they are warm... see if oil is circulating through the cooler..make sure the radiator is clear of any debris that could be blocking air flow... remove the filter under the seat and look at the oil condition in the canister..

I have changed the filter in the last twenty hours, the canister was clean when I changd it. The transmssion pulls strong until it gets hot and then it starts slowing down. The problem happened yesterday and I let the machine idle for about 10 minutes and ran it fortwo more hours before I quit for the day and it ran fine.

If you search on here you may find some disheartening info about my and others, feelings about older Deere 550's and their transmissions. If its starting to slip, either unload it on some other unsuspecting "victim" or dive in and be prepared to spend some serious money...
