I am wondering how hard it is to get parts for the IH British BD144 diesel engine. Mahindra is supposed to be able to supply parts for this engine but does anyone actually know if they can? How tough are parts to find for a T5 or TD5 crawler? Thanks!

Most parts I have needed, other than undercarriage, are still available from CNH. The engine was used in B-250 and B-275 farm tractors here in Canada. The fuel injection system was also used on the B-414 and 3414 diesel tractors with the BD-154 engine.

Easy to get for BD144 - even on this website in reply to DROTT, 12-30-2005 19:12:58
They are easy to get and relatively cheap. I just rebuilt mine last month, and did another one last year. Last engine kit I bought for a BD-144 was right here on this website (Tisco). Just look up a kit for an IH B-275. The link here is : Link All the major rebuilt parts are available right over the counter from International Harverster. You can get from an ag. dealer if wanted - just buy them for a B-275 farm tractor that has the same engine. I've bought the parts from IH and also aftermarket. Mahindra still makes the engine but it has been updated to direct-injection and is being used in their C4005-DI ag. tractor. There is a place that specializes in parts for British/Indian tractors and engines - I even got parts for my British Allis Chalmers there - and they have the kits for the IH/Mahindra BD-144 for the TD-5. I'm sure their prices are higher than at this site, but their site is at: Link

Drott, 1st thing to do is ask your local Mahindra dealer about the BD 144 engine replacement parts.
2nd, on the IH crawler, I have a TD5 and moving high wear parts are near impossible to find and are expensive when you do. Its shame to because its a neat little machine. Good luck..... .

I can't believe all the help I got from you guys. Thanks a million. Several CaseIH partsman said they were impossible to find parts for. BobMo, which moving parts are hard to find on the TD5. I am thinking of buying one and would like to know what to look for. I like the way the steering brakes are serviced compared to the T340 although I would buy a 340 if it were very nice but most small crawlers here in Northern WI are beat to death by 30 different owners.

You LIKE the steering clutch/brake on these crawlers?? You must never have worked 0n one,OK when new but terrible went rusted only one i think is worst is the H3 Allis ,Both those engineers that design those setups should have there hand put in a vise. T5 is a dry clutch so like the deere sitting and being out in the weather are real no nos for them,340 are a completly different animal and work great when everything is adjusted right but i guess every crawler has it faults and weakness. Just some are much easier to work on,if there is such a thing :)

I haven't worked on a TD5. I want an IH knowing full well that a D2 is probably better. My grip with a T340 is that you have to take the tracks and final drives off to work on the finicky ausco ball/ramp brake which I have tons of experience with on tractors. They can be reliable but any of them can stick or quit for real in one damp day. What do you think? I just think the T5 is a cool crawler, the only tractor ever tested at Nebraska to pull more than it's own weight. I would keep it inside.

Yes i don't care for the 340 set up much either but do like the plantary drive . My personal love is the little Case 310's and 350's I have a bunch I also work a OC3 everyday for years It is a loader with Forks and it is small enought to get around my ever shrinking space Some days i put over 8 hours on this machine and it has served me well. The t5 is a cute dozer also so go for it if it is what you like. Like i said they all have there Good and Bad Points. I would stay away frokm D2 unless you have big money to spend on parts Also Check 1952 Nebraska test I believe Terra Trac GT 30 pulled 10% more then its weight double check but don't buy one of them...LOL

Thanks for the help. You are right about the Terra Trac but my figures from IH literature (which could be propaganda) show the Terra Trac "pulled 101.05% of it weight of 4471 pounds at 8.33% track slippage in May 1952. Slippage limits for track type tractors on test was reduced to 7% maximum in 1959." The TD5 pulled 105.9% it's weight with 6.82% slippage in 1960. I hope I am not nitpicking, I just am loyal IH. I can't believe you knew about the Terra Trac. I never heard of it other than the IH sales bulletin I have. You must have run a bunch of crawlers. I have drove one about 50' in my life. I am wondering how high D2 parts are. Are they hard to work on? Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
