Anyone have any ideas about how water would be getting into the oil of the JD 219 diesel besides a cracked head or bad sleeve seals? My brother's backhoe was in the shop in New Orleans before Katrina and the mechanic had the head magnafluxed and found no cracks. He hadn't pulled sleeves before the hurricane hit and of course now the sleeves got some flood waters in them and have surface rust. Before we pull sleeves and go through the whole engine I wanted to make sure we weren't overlooking something. The machine ran great before this happened. We traveled over to New Orleans to get the machine and will be trying to clean it up and get it back into service. BTW, New Orleans east is like being in a movie--unbelievable. Neighborhoods completely deserted, no power, no people, no sounds--just gutted out homes and piles of personal belongings out by the street.

Take a look at the oil cooler (assuming you have one). On my 2350 MFWD which has the 4-239, which is a bigger version of the 4-219, there is an oil cooler under the oil filter. When I had antifreeze in the oil, I first tested the oil cooler, hoping against hope it was that and not the sleeves, but I was not so lucky and had to do an inframe. But you might look at the oil cooler if you have one, you might be luckier and have a pinhole in that, which is a lot easier to fix than sleeves. You'd be barkin' at a new oil cooler which is tons cheaper than an overhaul. AFter all is said and done, use coolant additive after that to guard against sleeve pitting. Hope this helps and good luck.

I just got a manual so I'll be doing some studying to see if it has an oil cooler. Had that problem on my shrimp boat once but didn't think of it here--like you said--that would be an easier fix...Thanks.

Those have problems with sleeve pitting if the coolant isn't keep changed.

Mike,

Are you saying that pitting may have caused a hole clean through the sleeve? Sounds like I need to pull the sleeves whether we reuse them or not.

Thanks.

Yep ! They can get a hole clear through them, sometimes very hard to see. I did a 2840 that the sleeves looked pretty pit free, but in one spot it had a hole clear through to the inside very small looked like it was lasered in.Very funny how they can end up. If you have an oil cooler that is also a possiblity.
