Anyone know anything about this make of tractor? It's a Liebherr 631 track loader. I'm looking for a winter project.

I've spoken with a few excavators who have Leibherrs. They both said they were good units, German made with Mercedes engines. I said "wow those must be awfully expensive on parts", and they said no they weren't much different than other makes (which are expensive too of course). One guy had a Leibherr tracked hoe and it had an air cooled engine, which he said was a good unit because you didn't have to worry about coolant. And I think he said it had a sensor that detected if the cooling fan stopped working (driven by a belt?), which would alarm in the cab and even automatically shut the motor down if it detected the fan stopped running. Anyway he liked Leibherr's overall, but considering they are foreign (to the US), I would imagine parts availability (especially used) will be more constrained than with a much more common domestic manufacturer (like Cat for instance).

I operated one in the early 90s,plus a 632 dozer later on.I think it had a Merc V8 engine,Hydrostatic drive,& was a strong unit...There were also 611s,621s & maybe a 641.
You'd have to see about parts back-up,as they're not common outside Europe.I don't know what they're like after having worked several thousand hours, but I found them to be OK the short time I worked them.

Thanks for your input, parts availability was my first conserne also. The engine is repairable, but I wonder about the hydrostatic drive, parts can be real expensive for them. Thanks again.

Here in Australia, there are quite a few of their excavators working in mining....I wonder if it's the same in the USA.This would indicate some parts availability.Liebherr also made wheeled excavators, which seem to be more common in the States than here.
