What kind of lubricant do you use in the chain drive cases and how do you check the lubricant level?

I have this machine and I use regular motor oil. One gallon per side(from service manual) These machines are bad for water getting in the housings and when it gets bad enough it gets into the wheel bearings and washes all the grease out, been there. If you have never looked inside you need to ck yours and drain out if water is inside. there are large drain plugs on the lower front of the housings right behind the lift cylinders. If the rims are oily around the hubs then you probably have water in the reserviors. The wheel bearings will let you know when they get dry by making a popping sound. The bearings can be bought at a bearing house, they are a little cheaper than Case, Around $50 per wheel but not much fun installing. These are tough old skidsteers.

I purchased this loader with some bad drive sprockets. I replaced 3 sprockets as well as all of the chains. I also cleaned and lubed the wheel bearings and replaced all axle seals. Case says use 15W40 motor oil and add some sort of additive that they sell. I was curious as to why an additive would be necessary. Thanks for your input
