If you do have to remove the pump housing , remove the nut on the shaft . Its usually staked on the threads, so it may come off a little hard. Then get 2 small to medium chisels of equal or near equal size. Tap them in on either side of the shaft on the outer portion of the drive gear. This will be between the gear and the front plate of the engine. Eventually the gear will pop off when you least expect it and one of the chisels will hit you in the head on its way down !! So be prepared. If there are balancer shafts just remember to position that one that the oil pump gear drives correctly on reassembly. They will be timed the same from side to side... If the left one is at 6 o'clock then the right one is at 6 o'clock... they rotate opposite each other so if its at 3.o'clock then the other is at 9 o'clock position ... etc ...

Unless I getting senile, you don't have to remove the oilpump to get the front main-cap off. Just take the back cover and tube off of the oil pump by removing the four bolts and you'll have enough room.
